Brian
Daughton - Photography
I was born in the city of Cork in Ireland.
On leaving school l studied architectural design at the Cork
Regional Technical College. Since 1983 l have lived and worked
in a variety of countries including, Germany, Greece, Italy,
the UK and Argentina.
In Buenos Aires where l
lived from 1990 to 97 l developed my interest in photography,
enrolling at the Escuela National de Fotografia (National School
of Photography) where l studied for 3 years under the direction
of Jorge Monaco, who is one of Latin America's leading photograhers.
On my graduation l was awarded a solo exhibition of my work. The
photographs, which documented in monochrome the city of Buenos
Aires ('A City in Exile'), were very well received. Since the
nineties the city of Buenos Aires has been a constant motif in
my work.
In 1998 l returned to London
to complete my photographic studies at Goldsmiths College in London
where l completed an MA in 'Image and Communication' (Photography).
On graduation my work was exhibited at the 'Fink Exhibition' in
Hoxton Square in London. It was in this period that l began producing
the large-scale colour images mounted on aluminium for which l
am better known. However, my work is also available in smaller
scale formats, mounted and framed in a more traditional manner.
In my work l try to draw attention to places overlooked. Places
which have been touched, reworked, damaged. Much of my work is
concerned with peeling back the layers of the city, investigating
the fabric, unearthing the different planes. In my best work l
try to achieve a sense of alchemy; when the image transcends representation
and becoming more a suggestion rather than a statement of a place.
From 1999 to 2003 l was
employed at Goldsmiths College, University of London as a photography
tutor and studio manager in the Visual Arts department where l
provided technical and theoretical support to art students working
on studio based photographic projects. In 2001 l was selected
for the Kobal prize at the National Portrait Gallery. Last year
(2004) l won the bronze medal in the 'Photoart' at the London
Photographic Awards. l now divide my time between working as a
freelance photographer from my studio in south London and as a
visiting lecturer at the University of the Arts. l am married
to Debora and we have two children, Andrea and Valentina. In recent
years l has begun to work more with design agencies in London,
creating specific images for interior locations.
